Mike Shady guaranteed Memorial Day weekend 1992 would be memorable. Shady, Ripon, Wis., improved one position from his '91 finish and upended leading qualifier Parker Bohn III, 247-178, to win his first title in the $125,000 Earl Anthony PBA Open at Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl. Shady earned the $18,000 first prize and qualified for a berth in the Firestone Tournament of Champions with his victory. Second-seeded Shady opened in the first frame of both of his championship round games and tacked on a seven-bagger in the title game against Bohn, who had earned the leading qualifier position by nearly 300 pins. Bohn, Freehold, N.J., collected $9,500 as runnerup. In the opening game of ESPN's first PBA championship round telecast of the year, Dave Traber defeated newlywed Scott Devers of Richmond, Ind., 255-188. Traber then continued against Mark Turney, Corpus Christi, Texas, 227-221, before falling to Shady in the semifinal, 245-234. Traber, Woodstock, Ill., earned $7,000 for third place, Turney cashed for $5,500 and Devers $4,500, which he applied toward a belated Hawaiian honeymoon.
