His third appearance in the championship finals proved the charm for Eric Forkel, who captured the $145,000 Flagship City Open at Eastway Lanes. Forkel, Chatsworth, Calif., turned back fourth-seeded Dave Husted, 204-192, to earn the $27,000 first prize and qualified for the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Nursing an one-pin lead after nine frames, Forkel came through in the clutch with three closing strikes to lock out Husted and became the first champion of 1992 to survive from the leading qualifier position. A late-falling 10-pin on his final ball denied Husted the opportunity to strike out in his 10th frame, which would have forced a two-frame rolloff. In the first game of the ABC-TV championship finals, Husted faced an intimidating opponent in hometown hero Ron Palombi Jr., who enjoyed the capacity crowd's partisan expressions. However, Husted was equal to the task and whipped Palombi, 269-203. Next up was '91 Flagship City runnerup Walter Ray Williams Jr., Stockton, Calif., who fell to Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., 225-202. In the semifinal game, Husted's momentum continued against first-time finalist Eugene McCune, Munster, Ind., 253-179. Husted pocketed $14,000 for his second-place finish; McCune son of PBA Hall of Famer Don McCune, collected a career best $8,000 for third; Williams earned $6,000 for fourth; and Palombi $5,000 for fifth. Earlier in the week of the Flagship City Open, the PBA unveiled the Inaugural KOOL "Shootout," an one-game exhibition match featuring two players. Marc McDowell defeated hometown favorite Ron Palombi Jr., 211-177.
