Mike Scroggins Stops Lawrence In Sacramento

It was a bittersweet victory, but easy enough to accept once inside the winner's circle for Mike Scroggins, who topped roommate and leading qualifier Robert Lawrence, 242-202, to win the $132,500 ARC Sacramento PBA Open at Mardi Gras Lanes.

Secant-seeded Scroggins, Amarillo, Texas, struck on eight of his first nine shots and cruised home to earn ft 123,000 first prize, his first PBA title and a berth In the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Ironically, he also bumped Lawrence (the only right-hander among the Arc finalists) from the exclusive 52-man Firestone field.

In the first game of the ABC Sports-televised championship round, Mike Aulby defeated Parker Bohn III, Freehold, N.J., 176-153. Aulby, Indianapolis, the only player to have been named both PBA Rookie of the Year (1979) and PBA Player of the Year (1985), next sidelined Joe Salvemini, Oklahoma City, Okla., 183-181.

M the Semifinal game, Scroggins entered and the unassuming first-time TV finalist denied Aulby the distinction of becoming the PBA's seventh player to earn 20 titles when he defeated him, 246-221.
