Chris Warren broke Amleto Monacelli's lock on bragging rights at Northrock Lanes by defeating third-seeded Eric Forkel, 238-210, to win the $130,000 Wichita Open. Warren, Dallas, came from behind to claim his fourth PBA title and the $20,000 first prize. Forkel, Chatsworth, Calif., was competing in his first championship game and appearing among the final five for just the second time in his seven-year career as a part-time competitor on the PBA Tour. Forkel led Warren by seven pins after five frames, but Warren then unleashed a four-bagger late in the game to emerge victorious. Forkel had turned back two-time Wichita Open champ and the 1989 and '90 PBA Player of the Year Monacelli, 245-182, in the semifinal game to allow a new tournament winner other than the popular Venezuelan. In the opening game of the ABC Sports-televised finals, Hugh Miller defeated first-time finalist David Guindon of West Seneca, N.Y., 226-199, and then Forkel edged Miller, Seattle, 205-202.
