Leading qualifier Ray Edwards took advantage of his first-ever appearance in the championship round and captured the $130,000 El Paso Open at Bowl El Paso. Edwards, Centereach, N.Y., turned back third-seeded Bob Benoit, 216-180, for his first PBA title and the $20,000 top prize. Admittedly nervous, Edwards nonetheless opened his game with a triple, spare and double, while Benoit struck, then suffered back-to-back open frames and never recovered. Benoit had worked past two opponents earlier and was seeking his third PBA title of 1991. Edwards said, "The first three strikes eased the pressure and I tried not to think about who I was bowling. I couldn't get an ounce of sleep last night, thinking about bowling on national TV for a title. The whole experience was overwhelming." The ABC Sports telecast began with Curtis Odom, Winston-Salem, N.C., turning back '91 average leader Norm Duke, Albuquerque, N.M., 242-215. Odom then fail to Benoit, Topeka, Kan., 226-224, who also defeated first-time finalist and leading PBA Rookie of the Year candidate Ricky Ward, N. Fort Myers, Fla., 222-205. Benoit earned $10,500 as runner-up, Ward collected $7,000, Odom received $5,500 for fourth place and Duke $4,500.
