Del Ballard Jr. became the fourth three-time PBA champion in 1991 with his victory In the $140,000 Kessler Open at Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl. Ballard defeated fifth-seeded Mike Shady of Ripon, Wis., 226-164, for the $23,000 first prize and his eighth PBA title. Ballard and partner Bob Benoit had captured the Beaumont PBA Doubles Classic two weeks earlier. As has become Ballard's trademark, the Richardson, Texas, pro came from behind beginning with a "Brooklyn" carry in the fourth frame and tacked on three more strikes to pull away from second-year pro Shady. Shady had won his three previous games without having an open frame, but suffered two opens in the title game. In the first game of the ESPN-televised championship round, Shady defeated Bill Oakes, Irving, Texas, 216-215. Shady then turned back left-handers Parker Bohn III, Freehold, N.J., 226-143, and Scott Devers of Richmond, Ind., 217-193. This was Shady's fourth appearance in the televised finals and second runner-up finish in six weeks, for which he earned $12,000.
