After nine frustrating years on the PBA Tour, John Mazza is making amends in quick fashion. The Mt. Clemens, Mich., left-hander claimed his third PBA title and third of the year in the $125,000 Celebrity Denver Open at Celebrity Sports Center. Leading qualifier by a 299-pin margin, Mazza turned back second-seeded Parker Bohn III, Freehold, N.J., 269-190, for the $18,000 payday. Mazza struck on nine of his first 10 shots in the championship match. "I felt good going into the final game," Bohn said. "As it turned out, the lanes tightened up, I kept inching left but just couldn't get there fast enough." Bohn collected $9,500 as runner-up in his second consecutive championship round appearance, after struggling for the first four months of the 1991 Winter Tour. In the opening game of the ESPN-televised finals, Mike Shady of Ripon, Wis., defeated the previous week's Kessler Classic winner, Bryan Goebel, Merriam, Kan., 184-173. Shady then ousted Curtis Odom, Winston-Salem, N.C., 212-199, before Bohn entered and defeated the second-year pro, 226-204.
