Jess Stayrook found his visit to Eastway Lanes for the inaugural $130,000 Flagship City Open simply "Erie-sistible." Stayrook defeated fifth-seeded Walter Ray Williams Jr., 256-207, for the $20,000 first prize, his second PBA title, and re-qualified for the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Stayrook, San Diego, Calif., spared in his first frame and then strung seven strikes to lead by 60 pins in the eighth frame before coasting home comfortably. The victory came nearly two years following his first PBA Tour triumph in Seattle in 1989. In the first game of the ABC Sports-televised finals, Williams defeated fourth-seeded Jeff Bellinger, Columbia, S.C., 224-206. The 1986 PBA Player of the Year then bounced Harry Sullins of Detroit, 236-176. In the semifinal game, PBA President Marc McDowell, Madison, Wis., then fell to Williams, 257-191. McDowell earned $7,000 for third place, Sullins $5,500 for fourth and Bellinger $4,500.
