Pete Weber turned back three opponents en route to his 15th PBA title and his second before hometown fans In the $150,000 Toyota Classic at Tropicana Lanes. Weber earned $27,000 in defeating leading qualifier Doug Kent of Canandaigua, N.Y., 213-206, for his second victory of the year. Weber also won at St. Louis in 1986. Kent was making his third championship round appearance of his career (and of 1990) and fell into trouble in the opening frame, leaving the 1-2-4-10 "washout," which he failed to convert. Weber spared his first three frames and then mounted a triple to open a 29-pin cushion, which Kent never threatened. Kent's closing three-bagger pulled the score to within the same seven-pin margin of the first frame. The opening game saw another local favorite, Leroy Bornhop of St. Charles, Mo., top fifth-seeded Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas, 200-179. Bornhop then fell to Weber, 189-186, when he failed to strike on his first shot of the 10th frame. Weber next defeated reigning PBA Player of the Year, Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, 234-178, and his momentum crested into the title match.
