Hugh Miller ended a six-year wait for his fifth PBA title in the $125,000 Fresno Open at Cedar Lanes. Miller, from Seattle, defeated leading qualifier Joe Salvemini, Oklahoma City, Okla., 191-184, for the $18,000 top prize. Miller opened the title match with three consecutive spares, while Salvemini struck on two of his first three shots. Both players opened in the fourth frame, giving Salvemini a four-pin lead. Another open by Salvemini in the fifth left the door open for Miller, who struck on three of his next four shots, giving him an 18-pin lead through eight frames. Salvemini needed two strikes and a seven-count in the final frame for the win. He got the first strike but a stubborn 7-pin cost him his fourth PBA title. Bob Handley of Pompano Beach, Fla., opened the championship round by topping defending champion Marc McDowell, Madison, Wis., 191-171. Handley, whose last title came at the 1987 Greater Hartford Open in Windsor Locks, Conn., then downed third-seeded Dave Arnold of Mesa, Ariz., 210-196. Handley's bid for his fifth PBA title came to an end when he bowed to Miller, 248-209.
