Spurred on by a loud contingent of hometown fans, Brian Voss of Boca Raton, Fla., used a nine-strike barrage to defeat Scott Devers of Richmond, Ind., 245-214, and capture the $160,000 Budweiser Classic at Don Carter's All Star Lanes-Sunrise. The win, worth $31,000 to Voss, was his ninth career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title and he likened it to a fairy tale. Voss was married the day after his triumph In Boca Raton, 25 miles away. Voss struck on three of his first four shots while Devers suffered an open frame in the second when he failed to convert a difficult 4-10 split. Although Voss missed a spare of his own In the fifth frame, he followed It with six consecutive strikes and Devers could not recover. Devers beat Rich Wolfe In the semifinal, 244-243, to earn a shot at Voss and the $31,000 top prize. Wolfe, Falls Church, Va., making his first telecast, knocked off Rick Steelsmith of Wichita, Kan., 206-179, in the second match of the day. Steelsmith opened the ABC Sports-televised finals by downing Tony Marrese of Hilton Head Island, S.C., 208-202, in front of a capacity crowd at the palatial Don Carter's All-Star Lanes.
