$175,000 AC-DELCO CLASSIC
Gable House Bowl, Torrance, Calif., Jan 9-13, 1990

AC-Delco Charges Ron Williams

Ron Williams opened the 1990 PBA campaign in fine fashion by capturing the $175,000 AC-Delco Classic at Gable House Bowl and regained a berth in the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Williams had to defeat first-time finalist Mark Thayer to notch his second PBA crown and the $35,000 first prize.

Thayer opened with a double while Williams started with three spares and then strung a four-bagger to lead by 10 pins after seven frames. Williams missed a 10-pin conversion in his eighth frame and when Thayer struck in his eighth, the championship outcome ultimately would be determined in the final frames. Thayer spared twice and struck to sit with a 212, but Williams needed only 20 fill pins in his 10th frame to clinch and he doubled and nine-counted for 232.

In the first match of the inaugural telecast of ABC-TV's 29th consecutive season of "Pro Bowlers Tour," Mark Williams bested Marshall Holman, Medford, Ore., 213-195. Williams, Beaumont, Texas, then took the measure of Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., 231-200, before yielding to Thayer, 222-204, in the semifinal.
