After knocking on the door five times previously this year, Jess Stayrook, San Diego, Calif., broke through for his first PBA championship in the $150,000 Seattle Open at Skyway Park Bowl. Top-seeded Stayrook defeated Joe Salvemini, Colorado Springs, Colo., 235-202, for the $27,000 first prize and an invitation to the 1990 Firestone Tournament of Champions in the Akron suburb of Fairlawn, Ohio. Stayrook began the tournament with a perfect game in his very first game of qualifying, which also was the first 300 game in Skyway Park Bowl's three-year hosting of the Tour. In the championship game, however, Stayrook didn't strike until the fifth frame, while Salvemini nursed a seven-pin lead. Stayrook finally found his mark and strung a four-bagger to take the lead. Salvemini couldn't take advantage of Stayrook sparing in the ninth as he left the 2-4-8 in his own ninth frame and left the 41-pin to spell his defeat. Salvemini said, "I just threw a boneheaded shot in the ninth - I hadn't shot that spare all week. I should have moved right and it cost me." Stayrook said, "I wasn't nervous until the ninth frame, when I couldn't stop my left knee from shaking after that four-bagger. I knew (winning) was close and It would be a long ride home If I hadn't won." In the first game of the ESPN telecast, Andy Neuer of Milton, Pa., defeated Dallas' Chris Warren, 249-202, before falling to Salvemini, 225-211. Salvemini then topped second-seeded Dennis Horan Jr., Santa Clara, Calif., 204-192, in the semifinal game.
