Marc McDowell of Madison, Wis., won three games on route to his first Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) championship in the $125,000 Fresno Open at host Cedar Lanes. McDowell defeated leading qualifier Tony Marrese, Hilton Head Island, S.C., 234-198, for the $18,000 first prize. McDowell struck, spared and opened in his first three frames of the title match while Marrese spared three single-pin leaves in his first three frames to take an 11-pin lead. From that point on it was all McDowell, who came back with a five-bagger, spare and closing triple, and Marrese never doubled until the l0th. McDowell, the 1986 PBA Rookie of the Year, was especially relieved not to be saddled with his fourth PBA runnerup finish end said, "Finally, I was the guy standing at the end with that winning feeling. It really was Tony's tournament to win after bowling so well all week, so I felt bad for him," he said. "This takes the pressure off me in not having won end proves I deserved being Rookie of the Year - It wasn't a fluke." Marrese was the lone lefthander in the final five and led the tournament by 242 pins after 42 games. "I was in control of my game, but can't control my opponent's game," he said afterward. "I felt confident and comfortable, although it seemed I left more beck row pins in my one game than during any block during the tournament."
