Scott Devers overcame a missed spare in the ninth frame by tossing a final frame three-bagger to defeat Dave Arnold, 207-185, and win the $130,000 Columbia 300 Open. Devers, a lefthander from Centerville, Ind., was never out of the pocket in the title game but fell behind by four pins going into the 10th frame when his shot at a 7-pin fell into the channel. By recovering with the closing pressure strikes, Devers forced Arnold to post a final frame double for victory but the right-hander missed the headpin on his first attempt. Arnold, 24, qualifying for the championship round for the second straight week, moved up to challenge Devers by eliminating Kent Wagner, 218-178, and Purvis Granger, 258-191, at Highland Lanes. Seeking his first national tour title, Arnold, Campbell, Calif., showed signs of nervousness in the first frame of the championship game when he skidded by a 6-9 spare leave. Devers could not pull away, however, leaving 7-pins in the second and fourth frames before notching a double. The ESPN televised championship round began with Wagner taking on Mark Baker, Garden Grove, Calif., with the knowledge that the fourth or fifth-place qualifier had won the three previous Summer Tour tournaments. Wagner managed a double and a nine count in the 10th frame to tie Baker at 186 and then ousted Baker in the succeeding two-frame roll-off, keeping alive his bid to successfully defend his Austin victory of 1987.
