Sam Maccarone quickly erased the mantle of "most earnings without a title" by winning the $130,000 Kessler Classic, after inheriting that dubious distinction from Pete McCordic just six weeks earlier. Maccarone bested leading qualifier Walter Ray Williams Jr., 237-225, for the $20,000 first-prize and frustrated Williams for the second straight week as the tournament's top seed. Maccarone advanced from the fifth-seeded position after squeaking into the championship finals in the position round. The Glassboro, N.J., pro got up in the 10th frame needing a mark, and he struck to clinch his emotional first championship. Maccarone began the ESPN finals by topping Dave Arnold, Campbell, Calif., 214-185. Arnold was making his second championship appearance ever and also the second at host Active West Town Square Lanes, while Maccarone, a seven-year tour veteran competing in his 201st PBA national tournament, went over the $200,000 mark in career earnings. Next up for Maccarone, Glassboro, N.J., was Mark Williams, Beaumont, Texas, already a two-time winner on the '88 tour but he was no match for Maccarone this night and he bowed, 227-204. In the semifinal game, Mark Baker of nearby Garden Grove entered the fray and Maccarone had things well in hand until Baker strung a three-bagger late to close the gap, but then opened in the ninth which settled matters between them, 243-209.
