In a rematch of the 1986 Austin Open final the outcome was the same, with Steve Cook topping Rod Pasteur, 193-175, to win the $150,000 A & W Pro Bowlers Classic at Fair Lanes Squaw Peak. For Cook, it was his "lucky" 13th PBA championship, worth $27,000, but for Pasteur, this runnerup finish was more difficult to accept. Pasteur, Miami, Fla., led early in the title game, but back-to-back opens in the fourth and fifth frames allowed Cook the opportunity to control his own fate. Cook, Roseville, Calif., admittedly struggled to capitalize immediately and after chopping the 5-8 spare in his ninth provided Pasteur second life. Pasteur could have clinched his first PBA championship with a 10th-frame strike or forced a tie-breaking roll-off with a nine-count and spare but disastrously left the 4-6-7-8-10 split. There was good reason for Pasteur's confidence after steamrolling Marshall Holman, Medford, Ore., 238-148, in his first game. Holman had opened the ABC Sports finals by ousting Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., 222-199. Pasteur then gained momentum and perpetuated second-seeded Philip Ringener's hard luck in the championship round by cruising through their semifinal match, 278-173. Ringener's TV opponents now are averaging 256 in five games against the Big Spring, Texas, pro, following Pasteur's pasting.
