Part-time PBA Tour competitor Roger Bowker, Ocala, Fla., survived the championship finals and downed local favorite Purvis Granger, Lafayette, La., 224-189, to emerge with his first PBA title in the $200,000 Don Carter's Greater New Orleans Classic. Bowker collected the $38,000 first prize and earned a trip to the Firestone Tournament of Champions in the PBA's first national tournament return to the New Orleans area since 1978. "Who Dat?" was the New Orleans Saints rallying cry during the season but could have been applicable to the lack of television finals experience among the championship lineup at Don Carter's All-Star Lanes-Harvey. The matches were not indicative of any "network nervousness" among the players who bested a top notch field over 42 games of qualifying and match play. Ten-time titlist Pete Weber, Florissant, Mo., was the only veteran among the five and took advantage of his experience in topping hometown pro Scott Monteleone, 256-236, despite the capacity crowd's chants of "Scoot, Scoot" for Monteleone, one of the premier players in the PBA's Southern Region, along with Bowker. Enter Tony Westlake, Edmond, Okla., who was trying to make It three consecutive triumphs for Richard Altman sponsored players and Westlake gave every indication he would be equally unstoppable as be bounced Weber, 259-227, behind 10 strikes. Granger then halted Westlake's momentum, 248-198, on the strength of six late strikes.
