Joe Berardi admittedly was the recipient of several turns of good fortune en route to his 248-227 victory against Walter Ray Williams Jr. in the $150,000 AC-Delco Classic. This was Berardi's first singles title since capturing the 1983 Firestone Tournament of Champions. In collecting the $27,000 first prize and his seventh PBA championship, Berardi said, "I've always believed patience is genius in disguise." Against leading qualifier Williams, Stockton, Calif., Berardi carried a pair of key crossover hits in opening with a triple and stringing a four late in their game. Williams was making his third consecutive cham-pionship finals appearance and stayed close on the strength of his own four-bagger mid-game. Williams struck in his ninth but left a solid 10-pin on his next shot, relieving the pressure Berardi would have faced in order to clinch. Instead, Berardi just needed a nine-count for the victory. In the opening game of the ABC Sports' telecast Mark Roth, Spring Lakes Hts., N.J., downed non-winner Jim Pencak, Richmond Heights, Ohio, 207-170. Next up for Roth was traveling partner and roommate Berardi, Brooklyn, N.Y., who benefited early from a "hometown" crossover carry while Roth struggled and finally fell, 212-182. Berardi's good fortunes continued against Pete Weber, Florissant, Mo., who pounded the pocket but was stung by solid single-pin leaves four times and he bowed, 258-199.
