It had been a three and one-half year drought until Ron Palombi's second Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) championship, but capturing the $135,000 True Value Open was worth the wait for the 25-year-old pro. Palombi, Erie, Pa., led the tournament nearly wire to wire and defended his leading qualifier position against little-known pro Randy Harvey of South Bend, Ind., 236-164, for the $21,000 first prize at Woodland Bowl. Both Palombi and fourth-seeded Harvey began the championship game with a strike followed by a split in the second frame. Palombi then pulled away with five consecutive strikes as Harvey struggled, but his $12,000 runnerup check greatly multiplied the four-year pros previous earnings of $475. Harvey opened the NBC-televised finals by defeating Mike Taylor, Carlsbad, Calif., 216-211, then came from behind to top Steve Cook, Roseville, Calif., 224-205, before upsetting Gary Dickinson, Edmond, Okla., 227-187. With his win, Palombi re-qualified for the Firestone Tournament of Champions.
