Parker Bohn III of Freehold, N.J., which is perhaps best known as "Bruce Springsteen country," proved to be "The Boss" in the $125,000 Columbia 300 Open, defeating fellow-lefthander Scott Devers, 224-195, for his first PBA championship. The championship match was close through five frames, with Bohn nursing a one-pin lead and then posting four straight strikes. Devers, Centerville, Ind., countered the string with a spare and a strike before missing a critical 7-pin in the eighth frame to nearly seal his fate. Bohn needed only to stay clean in his final frames to defeat good friend Devers for the $18,000 payday. PBA Hall of Famer Mark Roth, Spring Lake Heights, N.J., opened the finals by topping Mike Jasnau, Wichita, Kan., 194-150, before being downed by Devers, 210-204. Roth was given the opportunity to halt Dever's advancement with a double in the 10th frame, but a stubborn 7-pin on his second attempt proved his undoing. Devers then faced lefthander Bobby Jacks, Hayward, Calif., was seeking his first PBA Tour win since notching three titles in 1966, but the 25-year-old Devers prevailed, 235-203.
