Pritts Finds It In King Louie
Jimmie Pritts Jr. earned his third PBA title and the $140,000 King Louie Open crown on the strength of six game-ending strikes against Mike Jasnau. Pritts, Manchester, N.H., was the tournament's leading qualifier and topped Jasnau, Wichita, Kan., 238-214, to collect the $24,000 first prize. He also re-gained entry Into this year's Firestone Tournament of Champions and exempted himself from Pro Tour Qualifier (PTO) competition. Jasnau opened the championship game with four strikes and led Pritts by 30 pins through six frames. Pritts then called upon himself for a "gut check" and closed with his six-bagger heroics. The opening game found PBA President Ernie Schlegel, Vancouver, U.S.A., advancing against Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., 222-204. Jasnau, a local favorite and former collegiate All-American from Wichita State, then felled Schlegel, 212-188. Schlegel seemed to have the game well in hand, but failed to convert the 2-4-5 in his sixth frame and struggled thereafter. Second-seeded Pete Weber, Florissant, Mo., then entered the scene but had trouble on the right lane as Jasnau coasted In, 255-180. Jasnau's good fortune delighted the partisan cheering section at King Louie West Lanes, site of Jasnau's only other championship round finish, where he placed fourth in 1986. Ironically, Pritts had contemplated leaving the Tour earlier this winter, but wife Joanne persisted he continue. Therefore, it was an especially emotional trophy presentation witnessed by the ABC Sports cameras as the new champion embraced his young daughter Amy and son Jimmie III immediately afterward.
