Two-time PBA50 Player of the Year Ron Mohr Tops Qualifying After Northern California Classic Second Round

Ron Mohr’s win in the 2011 PBA50 Northern California Classic contributed to a dream season in which he earned his second PBA50 Player of the Year honor. But this year he’s hoping a win will end a nearly two-year drought since his last PBA50 Tour title.

Mohr moved a step closer to that goal as top qualifier after the second round of the Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV Tuesday at Harvest Park Bowl. He finished qualifying with a 3,861 16-game pinfall total (241.3 average) leading 31 players who advanced to Wednesday’s match play rounds.

“This tournament could be another game changer for me,” said Mohr whose last PBA50 Tour win came in the 2012 Senior Decatur (Ill.) Open. “Obviously in 2011 the win helped me earn (PBA50) Player of the Year, but this time it’s a great opportunity to get back in the win column.”

Mohr, who is bowling with a broken wrist on his left non-throwing hand, bowled games of 236, 233, 236, 258, 252, 215, 226 and 237 in Tuesday’s second eight-game round.

“I managed to get enough and avoid any real bad games,” said the eight-time PBA50 Tour winner. “It’s a real confidence boost to be the top qualifier and get the two byes in match play, but it’s not going to be easy with the group of guys who finished behind me.”

PBA Hall of Famers finished in six of the top eight spots. Players that finish qualifying in the top eight earn two-round byes for match play.

PBA50 Tour rookie Parker Bohn III, trying for his second win of the season, finished qualifying 14 pins behind Mohr in second with 3,847. Finishing third was Hall of Famer and eight-time PBA50 Tour winner Johnny Petraglia with 3,842, followed by four-time PBA50 Player of the Year and first round leader Tom Baker in fourth with 3,825.

Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., finished qualifying in sixth with 3,811 followed by Wayne Webb in seventh with 3,794, and Amleto Monacelli, also trying for his second win of the season, in eighth with 3,780.

Breaking up the string of Hall of Famers was Rick Francis who qualified fifth with 3,818.

Williams, the two-time defending PBA50 Player of the Year, will be trying to win his second consecutive title of the season after winning the USBC Senior Masters last week and will also be trying for his third consecutive win in the Northern California Classic.’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame is providing live streaming of the Northern California Classic.
