Andrew Anderson is Early Leader in PBA Tournament of Champions

FAIRLAWN, Ohio  – Two-time PBA Tour winner and 2018 PBA Player of the Year Andrew Anderson took the PBA Tournament of Champions first round lead Wednesday with a 1,470 six-game pinfall total.

The 23-year-old Anderson got off to a big start with 290 and then followed it up with games of 226, 231, 259, 244 and 220 at AMF Riviera Lanes.

“I was kind of surprised I bowled that well,” said Anderson, who won the 2018 USBC Masters and finished third in last season’s TOC. “I think the main thing was that I avoided having to play catch up with my adjustments. I was getting off to good starts and finished games well mainly by playing it safe and not being too aggressive.”

Two-time PBA Tournament of Champions winner Jason Belmonte of Australia began his quest for a record-tying 10th PBA Tour major title finishing the round in second 19 pins behind Anderson with a 1,451 six-game pinfall. Belmonte had games of 268, 224, 277, 238, 199 and 245.

For Belmonte, a third TOC title would also tie him with Jason Couch and Mike Durbin for most wins in PBA’s signature tournament which requires a player to have a PBA title to compete.

Qualifying continues this evening with the second qualifying round beginning at 6 p.m. ET. The entire field returns Thursday for the third qualifying round at 11 a.m. with a cut to the top 24 players advancing to robin match play round Thursday at 6 p.m., and Friday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. After 42 games, the top five players will advance to Sunday’s live stepladder finals on FOX at 4:30 p.m.
