$60,000 NORTHERN OHIO OPEN
Westgate Lanes, Fairview Park, Ohio, Oct 29-Nov 1, 1976
Mark One For Roth
Mark Roth, 25-year-old pro from Staten Island, N.Y., waltzed to victory in the $60,000 Northern Ohio Open.
Roth held the lead at Westgate Lanes after five of the six rounds of competition, surrendering that spot only after the second session to Paul Colwell, Tucson, Ariz., who finished 99 pins behind. A lead that had reached almost 300 pins at one time, had dwindled to 80 sticks during the final block before Roth staged a spectacular surge to sew up the fourth title of his career.
Starting out the concluding block with a victory, Roth then dropped three of his next four matches as Colwell closed in. The six foot, 175-pound New Yorker picked that time to come up with his two highest games of the 42-game long tournament. He shot back-to-back lines of 268 and 266 to roll up a huge lead once again and make meaningless a position round loss to Colwell.
