Johnson Edges Tuttle For Crown
Tommy Tuttle, a winner one week before, learned how it feels to lose out in the final game when Don Johnson took his measure at Waukegan, Ill., in a $40,000 competition.
The affable Tuttle, winner of 16 of his first 16 match games, appeared to have his second straight title locked up, but Johnson never let himself be counted out. When Tuttle dropped his first two games as the final block got under way, Johnson got a foot in the door and never took it out.
Going into the final contest, 26 pins separated the pair, meaning that whoever took the position round clash would be the winner. Johnson, who was capturing his 16th PBA championship, soon settled the issue. He shot a 279 at Tuttle, who registered 216 and the matter was settled, much to the winner's elation and to the loser's dejection.
