Butch Soper/Kim Canady Win Merit Mixed Doubles
The season-ending Merit Mixed Doubles Championship held a series of firsts for eventual winners Butch Soper and Kim Canady.
For the 46-year-old Soper, the event marked the first time in his 23-year PBA career that he had qualified for an invitational mixed doubles event. For Canady, a former Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour Rookie of the Year, the event marked the first time she had been seeded in the top 10 for the event.
For the first time, Sam's Town Hotel, Casino and Bowling Center hosted the event, which started with amateur competition and ended with the final round of match play for the professionals.
Soper, from Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Canady, a San Francisco resident, took advantage of their new surroundings to give Soper his first title since 1990 and Canady her second win of 1995. The title was the fifth of each player's career and earned the team a check for $40,000.
Soper and Canady owned a 207-pin lead with only eight games of match play remaining. However, the title would not come easily as Eric Forkel and Robin Romeo won their first four matches in the final round to get as close as 59 pins with four games left.
