Fair Lanes Capital Plaza, Washington, D.C., Mar 30-Apr 4, 1987
Pedersen In Capital Conquest
Randy Pedersen's victory outside the nation's capital in the $140,000 Fair Lanes Open against leading qualifier Rowdy Morrow, 232-211, made it two in a row and gave him the opportunity to tie a PBA record with a third straight win in the $150,000 Showboat Atlantic City Open. Pedersen began with four strikes against Morrow, while Morrow struck in five of his first seven frames, but opened In the second and seventh and never caught up. With his $23,000 first prize here, Pedersen has collected more than $70,000 in prize money the last two weeks. The opening game of the championship round was close throughout with Richard Bramwell, Escondido, Calif., prevailing, 233-227, despite Butch Soper's closing four-bagger. Bramwell then bowed to Pedersen, 258-214, as it was obvious to the Fair Lanes Capital Plaza audience the Santa Maria, Calif., pro hadn't lost his momentum from the previous week. Next up was tour veteran Sam Flanagan, Parkersburg, W. Va., who seemed to be trying to alter Pedersen's pace and fortune. Pedersen responded to Flanagan's more deliberate match play tactics with seven game-closing strikes for a convincing 249-183 semifinal victory. This was the PBA Tour's 17th consecutive stop in the Washington, D.C.-Greater Baltimore area and Fair Lanes also hosts a second PBA event later in the year - The Fair Lanes National Resident Pro Championship, which awards its winner a berth in the Firestone Tournament of Champions.
