Tom Baker Tops Qualifying for PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open

PBA Hall of Famer and four-time PBA50 Player of the Year Tom Baker of King, N.C., retained his lead after the second round of qualifying in the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino Open presented by MOTIV Tuesday, leading a field of 24 players heading into match play.
In the final tournament of the season, Baker finished qualifying with a 3,985 16-game pinfall total (249 average) bowling games of 266, 258, 236, 209, 239, 228, 259 and 244 in Tuesday’s second round.
“For me it was pretty much the same as yesterday,” said Baker, who is a 10-time winner on both the PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour. “The (lane condition) transition came in the fourth game like usual and I changed to a stronger ball in the fourth game just like yesterday. The only difference was I probably ended up play a little further inside toward the end of the block today.”
Baker, who is the only player with four PBA50 Player of the Year crowns, which he earned consecutively from 2005 to 2008, will be trying for his second title of the season, winning the PBA50 Greater Birmingham (Ala.) Open in May.
Right on Baker’s heels are two more of PBA’s all-time greats heading into match play. Hall of Famers Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., finished qualifying in second with a 3,970 pinfall and Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., finished third with a 3,921 pinfall.
In his rookie season on the PBA50 Tour, Weber, the winner of his second Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions title in April for his 37th career Tour win, won the United States Bowling Congress Senior Masters in June for his first PBA50 Tour title.
Still up for grabs is the third and final berth for the PBA50 Tour Finals with Weber and two-time PBA50 Tour winner Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha, Wis., battling for the spot. The Finals will be conducted as part of the World Series of Bowling V in Las Vegas in early November and telecast by ESPN.
Williams, the PBA Tour’s career titles leader with 47 wins, clinched his second consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year crown after last week’s Senior/Super Senior Doubles Classic and along with Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli who is not competing this week, clinched berths for the PBA50 Tour Finals.
Boresch qualified 29th after the first round and was in danger of missing the cut but rocketed to fifth with a 3,826 pinfall after bowling 2,068 (260.7 average) in the second round.
Two-time PBA50 Player of the year Ron Mohr of Las Vegas finished the day in fourth with a 3,861 pinfall.
Wednesday’s match play rounds get underway at 11 a.m. CT with championship rounds scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
