First Round Leader Bob Learn Jr. Hopes Better Decisions Will Mean Better Results In PBA50 DeHayes Insurance Group Championship

by JSchneider  |  Sunday, August 07, 3:42 PM

With three top-10 finishes on the PBA50 Tour this season, including a season’s best sixth-place in last week’s Dave Small’s Championship Lanes Classic, Bob Learn Jr. of Erie, Pa., feels that if he can eliminate making bad decisions he can capture his first win of the season.

Learn, who has three career PBA50 Tour titles, took the first round lead in the PBA50 DeHayes Insurance Group Championship presented by Pro Bowl West and Ebonite Sunday with a 1,894 eight-game pinfall total (236.7 average) bowling games of 248, 241, 213, 235, 279, 215, 268 and 195 at Pro Bowl West.

“Overall it’s been kind of a lackluster year,” said Learn, whose last title came in the 2015 PBA/PBA50 South Shore Doubles with partner DJ Archer. “There have been times when I felt like I was bowling real well but made some bad decisions when it was time to make adjustments that prevented me from getting some better finishes.

“Last week I just missed the show but I bowled well and that’s given me a lot more confidence here,” the five-time PBA Tour winner added. “I just have to make sure I make smart adjustments because you’re not going to get away with too many mistakes out here.”

Heading into Monday’s second qualifying round, Learn leads 2008 USBC Senior Masters winner Kenny Parks of Hammond, Ind., who finished the day in second 27 pins behind with a 1,867 pinfall.

PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela, who won the Fountain Valley Open in June for his sixth career PBA50 Tour title, is in third with a 1,867 pinfall, followed by one-time PBA50 Tour titlist Brian LeClair of Delmar, N.Y. with 1,852, and 2015 PBA50 Rookie of the Year Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas with 1,834.

Six-time 2016 season winner Pete Weber did not enter the event because of his lingering hip injury.
