Lite Beer Classic

$150,000 LITE BEER CLASSIC
Don Carter's Kendall Lanes, Miami, Fla., Feb 9-14, 1987

Impressive Day For Walter Ray

Walter Ray Williams Jr., the recently named 1986 Sporting News PBA Player of the Year, fully lived up to that billing when he came from fourth place to win the $150,000 Miller Lite Classic.

Williams, 27, Stockton, Calif., overwhelmed Marshall Holman in the title game at Don Carter's Kendall Lanes, 277-205, completing an afternoon in which he totaled 967 for four games to earn the $27,000 top prize. Perhaps more significantly, Williams gave himself the opportunity to win the $1 million Miller Lite Slam bonus by capturing both upcoming Miller-sponsored events in Milwaukee and Cleveland. A victory in one of those two tournaments would net Williams a $50,000 bonus.

Williams' first match proved to be his easiest as he downed Del Ballard Jr., Richardson, Texas, 228-161. Ballard, the winner of the $100,000 top prize in the season-opening Seagram's Coolers BPAA U.S. Open in Tacoma, Wash., boosted his early total to $109,680 with the fifth-place finish, less than $4,000 behind leading 1987 earner Pete McCordic ($113,200).

Williams came closest to being eliminated against 1985 Player of the Year Mike Aulby, Indianapolis, in the second match. The Californian prevailed, 226-217, when Aulby left a 6-pin on his first shot in the 10th frame, needing a big finish to pull out the game.

Defending champion avid Ozio, Vidor, Texas, was next to fall. Ozio was doomed by a 4-6-7-9-10 "Greek Church" combination in the eighth frame, allowing Williams to notch a 236-205 semifinal victory.
