Frustrated for nearly three years in championship finals, Brian Voss broke through in defeating Ron Williams, 208-186, for his third PBA victory in the 150,000 Quaker State Open. Voss, Tacoma, Wash., had last won at Houston in the summer of 1984 and had been bumped two weeks previously from the Firestone Tournament of Champions. Not only did the Quaker State win re-qualify him for the prestigious 1987 Firestone field, but Voss also lined his pockets handsomely with the $27,000 first prize. Williams, Cahokia, Ill., was the tournament's leading qualifier but opened in two of his first three frames of his second championship round appearance. Voss started the title game with an open frame but came back with a strike, spare and four-bagger to forge a 30-pin lead through seven frames. The opening game pitted Dennis Jacques, Middletown, N.J., against Dave Ferraro, Kingston, N.Y., with Ferraro advancing in the battle of Easterners, 238-213. Jacques had to exit quickly following his defeat, as he was scheduled to compete in the taping of the preliminary "Superstars" competition. Ferraro bowled one pin better in his effort against TV finals rookie Richard Bramwell, Escondido, Calif., 239-186, to then match up against Voss. Ferraro, a bowling center proprietor and perhaps the hottest bowler on tour (with a 3rd, 8th, 14th, 15th and a 25th-place finish in five outings), then bowed, 220-198, to establish the championship game twosome.
