Kent Wagner won the war against Pete Weber, 268-190, and his first PBA championship in the $175,000 Showboat Invitational but lost his battle to shoot a perfect game and had to "settle" for the $33,000 first prize. Wagner, Palmetto, Fla., collected strikes on his first eight balls in the championship game, but a stubborn 7-pin in the ninth frame ended his quest for the $100,000 perfect game bonus award from True Value Hardware Stores. Weber, Florissant, Mo., ended as runnerup for the second time in as many 1987 tournaments but was pacified with the $17,000 check he received after winning three of his four matches. He is rapidly approaching his earnings total of 1986 ($75,150), having won more than $73,000 thus far in '87. Wagner's victory spelled the end of a long streak of winless televised matches for him, breaking the drought after six championship round games, spanning five years. Wagner had captured the prestigious Bowlers Journal event at Showboat Bowling Center last summer, using a house ball, which gave him a degree of added confidence going into the finals. Weber began the championship round by topping Tony Westlake, Edmond, Okla., 196-184, and then edged fellow St. Louis-area pro Randy Lightfoot, St. Charles, Mo., 204-192. Weber collected the first five strikes in ousting another hometown friend, Rowdy Morrow, St. Louis, 255-226, which established the championship finalists.
