Three years' experience as a collegiate bowler and three years as a professional bowler finally paid off for Harry Sullins as he won the $135,000 True Value Open. In the championship game at Woodland Bowl In front of a national television audience on NBC Sports, Sullins, 29, upset the leading qualifier and the PBA's 1986 money leader, Walter Ray Williams Jr., 233-194, to claim his first Professional Bowlers Association title, a check for $21,000, a spot In the 1987 Firestone Tournament of Champions and a one-year exemption from Pro Tour Qualifier (PTQ) on the Tour. John Gant ousted Scott Devers from nearby Centerville, Ind., in the first game, 242-203, but lost his touch against third-seeded Sullins and fell, 233-198. Sullins then was matched against Bobby Jacks, whose 218-average for 42 games topped the field. Sullins emerged a 187-180 winner to propel himself into the championship game against Williams. Both finalists were open in the first frame of the final game before Sullins spared and got three strikes to take a 19-pin lead midway through the game. Three more strikes on his last four balls clinched the title. Williams collected $11,000 for second pace to push his yearly earnings to $143,490.
