Pete Weber defeated local favorite and leading qualifier AM Ishihara, 213-194, to pocket the $10,800 first prize and 12-month bragging rights for the U.S. in the Japan Cup '86. Weber led a continent of 16 leading FBA pros in this 32-game competition with 16 of Japan's top bowlers. In 1985, the Japanese finished 1-2 against the American PBA entries. PBA players also captured third through sixth places in the '86 tournament. The five-game nationally televised finals began with Mike Aulby topping Dennis Jacques, 206-195, by striking out in the 10th frame. Aulby had matters well in hand in his next game with good friend Bob Handley, who never could catch up following a four-bagger by Aulby in mid-game and Handley bowed, 244-224. Weber then entered the scene and Aulby, unable to double, held a slim lead until Weber converted the 2-7-10 split in the ninth and then doubled to clinch, 199-195. Amleto Monacelli of Venezuela was next up and never got untracked, losing to Weber, 245-173. Weber went on to collect his ninth PBA Tour victory and second of the '86 season.
