Two non-champions on the PBA Tour battled in the championship game of the Buffalo Open, with Jeff Bellinger emerging the victor against Randy Johnson, 203-181. Initially aggressive in their match, both players were cautious in the closing frames, not wanting to make a mistake and allow the other an opportunity to capitalize. Bellinger had both television and championship game experience, while Johnson was making his national television debut. Despite solid single-pin leaves in the sixth and crucial ninth frames, Bellinger hung on to pocket the $15,000 top prize and an invitation to the 1987 Firestone Tournament of Champions. Bellinger spared in the 10th frame, but a bad shot and resulting six count on his fill ball allowed Johnson the opportunity to throw a strike and spare for the victory. Johnson tallied six on his first shot, however, to spell his defeat. The championship round at Thruway Lanes began with PBA Senior sensation and ABC Hall of Famer Les Zikes bowing to Ron Palombi Jr., 255-206. Brian Voss then downed Palombi, 195-152, as Bellinger entered the scene to defeat Voss, 259-212.
