In one fell swoop, Walter Ray Williams Jr. won his third title of the 1986 Professional Bowlers Association season, captured a check for $18,000 and vaulted into the lead in both the official money ($118,460) and average race (214.44) as he won the $125,000 Hammer Open. A capacity crowd cheered the 27-year-old Californian in defeating leading qualifier Brian Voss, 237-223, in the championship game, after eliminating another crowd favorite, Guppy Troup, 244-212, in the semifinals of the championship round. The Hammer Open finals started with Troup toppling rookie Jack Jurek, making his professional debut on the national tour, in a 265-259 thriller. Troup then rallied to oust Kent Wagner, a finalist for the second straight week, 225-202.
