Steve Cook, one of the biggest men In the Professional Bowlers Association, took a giant step toward Sporting News PBA Player of the Year honors by stopping rookie Rod Pasteur, 189-180, in the championship game of the $115,000 Austin Open. It was the fourth title of the year for Cook - twice as many as any other player this year - and his 12th overall. With the $16,000 top prize, Cook also became the Tour's leading money winner with 1986 earnings of $108,380. Pasteur, one of an outstanding group of rookies on tour this year, was impressive in only his second appearance in the nationally televised finals. He opened the championship round by defeating 16-time PBA champion, Wayne Webb, 208-190. Pasteur then got a "Brooklyn" strike on his second ball in the 10th frame to turn back Kent Wagner, 201-195, and struck nine times in a 268-246 duel against John Gant, the 1984 Sporting News PBA Rookie of the Year. But against Cook, the strikes were few and far between. Pasteur struck only twice and struggled even to hit the 1-2 pocket the entire game. Cook didn't fare much better, striking only three times. He left the 4-6-7-10 split in the seventh frame to let Pasteur back into the tight match. Pasteur could have won the game with a double in the 10th frame, but he left the 2-4 on his first ball to finish second and pick up $8,250.
