The PBA Tour welcomed a new member to its roll of champions. But this titlist was distinguished in that Mats Karlsson, Gothenburg, Sweden, became the first foreign player to notch a PBA championship in grabbing the $115,000 Southern California Open. The top-seeded Karlsson topped Dave Husted, 243-218, for the $16,000 first prize and his first win as a pro. Karlsson had collected the 1983 AMF Grand Prix in Crawley, England, as an amateur after earning a berth in the field as an international invitee. In the opening game of the finals, Jim Harvey gave the crowd a preview of the strikes to come by opening with the first 11 against rookie Tony Westlake. On Harvey's 12th shot he sailed the ball wide of the 1-3 pocket and left the 1-2-10 standing for a 297 game to Westlake's 237. Harvey ran out of strikes against Brian Voss bowing, 228-166, and had to be consoled with the $5,000 check for fourth place. Husted then stepped in to defeat Voss, 260-196, and set up the championship showdown with top-seeded Karlsson.
