Eagle Soars In Seattle

Dale Eagle tied a PBA record in winning his third Professional Bowlers Association title after qualifying 24th for match play en route to victory in the $120,000 Ebonite-Firebolt Open.

Eagle presented his bride of two weeks, Penny Glenn, with an $18,000 wedding present by topping leading qualifier Marc McDowell, 228-215. Eagle recorded 31 strikes in his four-game march, which he termed, "my most confident victory."

"Four weeks ago I was down to my last $80 - I mean dead broke," Eagle said. "After beating Gary Dickinson in the opening game (258-235), I liked the idea of the next three opponents having little championship round experience."

After eliminating Dickinson, Eagle then stopped Bob Learn Jr., 247-246, despite Learn out-striking him, nine-seven. Bill Knight Jr. then stepped in, but was thwarted in his first PBA championship round appearance, 224-193, to set the stage for the title match-up.
