Big Steve Cook reached a milestone by winning the $125,000 Greater Hartford Open for his 10th PBA title. Cook upset top-seeded Rey Perez for the $18,000 first prize in a bizarre windup in the ninth and 10th frames of the title game, ending in a 192-168 decision for Cook. Cook had earned his way into the title game with a semifinal win over Del Warren, 222-194. In the early going of the title game with Perez, Cook was sailing along with a seemingly insurmountable 43-pin lead in the fifth frame. Perez already had suffered two splits and was struggling on the championship pair of lanes. Suddenly, Cook lost his touch and suffered a 6-7-9 split while Perez was rolling a three-bagger. Cook's lead was cut to 11 pins. Then Cook left the "big four" 4-6-7-10 split and Perez could have taken the lead. But, he inexplicably missed a 6-pin spare and added to his problems when he missed a 10th frame 3-6-9-10 leave by throwing the ball in the channel. The championship round began with Amleto Monacelli ousting Don Genalo, 223-214, and Monacelli then was topped by Warren, 245-233.
