Pete Weber accomplished the thrill of a lifetime when he captured the Professional Bowlers Association's $125,000 St. Louis Open. He won in front of a hometown crowd, something his illustrious father, Hall of Famer Dick Weber, had never been able to do in his brilliant PBA career. "You guys (newsmen) cannot believe it," Pete said in the pressroom afterward, "but I really wanted that trophy more than I wanted that $18,000 check." It was just moments after he had defeated leading qualifier Dennis Jacques, 267-227, to come up with his eighth title on the pro tour. But it was the semifinal game that inspired a cheering crowd at North Oaks Bowl and a national television audience. In that game Weber finished with six consecutive strikes to shut out Norm Duke in a 247-234 thriller. Weber was in second position in the final and waited until the five-foot, five-inch Duke came up with a pair of 235 games in eliminating non-champion Mats Karlsson, 235-224, and one-time winner Billy Young Jr., 235-207.
