David Ozio got the first leg up on the $1 million Lite Slam as he captured the $150,000 Lite Beer Classic at Don Carter's Kendall Lanes. Ozio led three of the four final rounds of the competition and accompanying him into the finals were Darryl Bower, Amleto Monacelli, Mark Baker and Walter Ray Williams Jr. In the first game, Baker recovered from a 12-pin deficit to close with five strikes and a 205-170 win. Baker, who won here two years ago, then hooked up with Monacelli in a scoring duel and prevailed, 257-227. In the semifinal match, Baker took an early lead, but suffered back-to-back splits in the seventh and eighth frames. Bower, a part-timer on the national tour, struck out in the 10th frame to cement a 205-176 victory and entry into the title game. The top-seeded Ozio toppled Bower, 207-195, in the title game. In winning, Ozio put himself in position to possibly win two more Lite-sponsored events at Milwaukee and Cleveland and claim the million-dollar bonus offered by the sponsoring Miller Brewing Company. A win in one of the two remaining events and Ozio would win $50,000.
