Dave Husted closed out 1985 on a positive note, averaging 256 while eliminating three opponents to capture the $125,000 Touring Players Championship and ended a three-year victory drought. To reach the winner's circle, Husted had to eliminate close friends Mark Roth and top-seeded Mark Baker. He did it in easy fashion, stopping Roth, 266-225, in the semifinals and then downing Baker, 268-238, for his third PBA title. Mark Williams opened the finals with a 237-199 win over Steve Wunderlich. Husted then sent Williams to the sidelines, 236-210. The 770 series rolled by Husted was the highest three-game set of the year in the championship round. But getting back into the Firestone Tournament of Champions was more important than the money or the scoring for Husted. For Baker, it was another disappointing loss. It was the fourth time he finished in the runnerup spot in 1985. As a consolation, Baker did capture the PBA's George Young Memorial Award for high average on the national tour. He needed to roll a 221 game or better to edge Marshall Holman, who missed the event with an injured wrist.
