Defending champion and hometown favorite Mike Aulby came within seven pins of realizing a number of goals, but in the final frame it was Darryl Bower, a part-time bowler, who won the $135,000 True Value Open, 213-206. Bower was to be reckoned with from the start. In his first game he doubled in the 10th frame to oust Jim Tilton, 205-200. Pete Weber was next up, but he bowed to lower, 235-200. PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia was next up and he led Bower until a 4-6-7-10 split in the seventh frame proved his undoing and Bower's 214-201 win propelled him into the title game. It was a close match into the fourth frame when Aulby left a 7-10 and from there he simply couldn't catch up.
