Guppy Troup took advantage of a letdown by Mark Baker in the championship match and posted a 184-156 decision for his eighth PBA title. In the semifinal, Dave Ferraro opened with eight strikes before leaving the 4-7 in the ninth. He spared and struck out for a 278. Baker spared in the first and matched Ferraro strike for strike after that. He also got the necessary strike on his first ball in the 10th, left a 10-pin and spared to win the record-setting match, 279-278 Ferraro set a PBA record with the highest losing game ever in the TV finals. Baker, however, couldn't continue striking in the title match. He struck only once against Troup and opened three times. In the opening game, Jim Tilton routed Philip Ringener, 258-209. Baker, a second-place finisher in three of the last seven tournaments, then eliminated Tilton, 188-169.
