Tony Cariello, who made the switch from amateur to professional bowling ranks, won his first PBA title as he captured the $125,000 Kessler Open at Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl by upending Mark Baker, 204-154. The defeat was a bitter one for Baker. He was the leading qualifier in the Denver Open and lost that one to Mike Aulby, and in this event he led the 160-man field by a comfortable margin, only to succumb to Cariello. Cariello qualified in the third position for the finals and waited while Tom Milton opened in the first frame, then drilled home 11 straight strikes for a 277-209 win over Mike Edwards. Milton lost his touch when Cariello moved onto the firing line as the burly Chicagoan notched a 214-172 win. Cariello's next opponent was Jim Harvey, and Cariello uncorked a 268-210 victory to set the stage for the title game. An omen of things to come struck Baker in the first frame when he inexplicably missed a 4 pin. Cariello, however, returned the lead to Baker when he missed the 3-6-10. Cariello made the necessary adjustments in his game, and a four-bagger sealed it for him as Baker missed a 2-pin in the fifth frame.
