Aulby Starts '85 With Spark

Mike Aulby started the new year right where he left off in 1984 . . . a winner.

The smooth-stroking lefthander won the $150,000 AC-Delco Classic at Union Square Lanes with a resounding 245-190 victory over John Gant.

In the first game, Guppy Troup and Pete McCordic battled to a 191 tie at the end of the regulation 10 frames, and Troup then won a two-frame (9th and 10th) roll-off, 39-37.

Troup then ran into 1984 Sporting News PBA Rookie of the Year Gant, who measured Troup, 226-193. Gant's next opponent was defending champion Butch Soper, who went down to defeat, 199-191, when he failed to double In the 10th frame.

Gant led early against Aulby, 126-106, but Aulby finally got zeroed in and nailed six strikes starting In the fifth frame to take a comfortable lead as Gant suffered a split and two misses in the last five frames.
