Mark Roth added yet another milestone to his storied career when he became pro bowling's second millionaire by downing top-seeded Pete Weber, 243-153, in the $125,000 Greater Detroit Open. In addition, Roth, 33, put himself in strong position for the Sporting News PBA Player of the Year honors. Roth first disarmed a red-hot Bob Handley, 211-193, after Handley had defeated Don Genalo, 299-265, in the first game of the championship round. A 10-pin cost Handley the perfect game. Defending champ Brian Voss then succumbed to Roth, 235-217. Roth had little trouble in the title-match as top-seeded Weber, 0-5 from the top position, never could get untracked. The $18,000 top prize gave Roth career PBA earnings of $1,007,424.
