Brian Voss, as had Pete Weber the week before, fired a 244 in the title game to defeat tournament leader Marshall Holman and claim victory in the $115,000 Houston Open. Voss put together a five-bagger beginning in the sixth frame to pull away from Holman, who could muster only 189. Coming from third, Voss got past Steve Fehr, 190-164, and Henry Gonzalez, 214-191, to earn a shot at Holman. Holman had averaged 225 through qualifying and match play to quality In the top-seeded position for the third straight tournament. He and Roth won the Showboat PBA Doubles Classic and Holman began the Summer Tour by setting the pace In both Texas tournaments. It was Voss' second PBA title and worth $16,000.
